Elena Long

Elena Mixon Long of Lake Jackson, Texas passed away on April 11, 2016. Funeral services will be at Lakewood Funeral Home at 96 North Dixie Dr, Lake Jackson April 14 for visitation 6-8 pm and service April 15 at 10:30 am. Then she will be transported to Ozark, AL for services on April 18 by Fuqua Bankston, 508 Faust Ave, Ozark and burial at Woodlawn Memory Garden at 531 N Hwy 231. Elena was born in Edison, Georgia on February 8, 1939, the oldest child and only daughter of Travis and Agnes Mixon. In 1945 the family moved to Ozark, Alabama, where her father eventually opened a dry goods store. Elena worked in that store after school and on Saturdays as she grew up. She attended Carroll High School in Ozark as did her future husband, George Long. After high school, Elena attended Judson College, a Baptist women's college where she received a bachelor's degree in history with a Spanish minor. During this time a mutual friend suggested she meet George Long who was attending Auburn University. A year after she graduated from Judson, they were married on July 5, 1962. Both the year before and the year after she married, Elena taught high school history while George obtained his master's degree. She left teaching when George found a job with Dow Chemical in Freeport, TX and they moved to Lake Jackson, TX in 1963. While raising their daughters, Elena was became a member of American Association of University Women, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and participated in Baptist women all of her life. During the 38 years that George worked for Dow, he and Elena moved to Salvador, Brazil for three years. About four years after they returned to Lake Jackson, Elena began substitute teaching for BISD. Eventually she became a full-time teacher with the district. She taught history, Spanish, and English as a second language over a ten year period at Freeport Intermediate, Clute Intermediate, Brazoswood High School, and the ninth grade center when it opened. Elena is preceded in death by her husband of over 53 years, George Long and her brother James Mixon. She is survived by her two daughters, Laurie Long of San Antonio, TX, and Amy Long and her husband Paddy Donovan of Lake Jackson, TX, Amy and Paddy's sons George and Jude Donovan. She is also survived by her brother David Mixon and his wife Carolyn and their daughter Rebecca Suggs and her husband Ashby and their three sons all of Madison, Mississippi; and her sister-in-law Mary Mixon and her son James E. Mixon and his wife Tonya and their five children all of Brandon, Florida. Honorary Pall Bearers: David Mixon, Paddy Donovan, Thomas J. Long, George Donovan, Jude Donovan, Cecil Tumlin, Bill Doumas.
