Dolores Poland McDougal, age 80, died suddenly of a massive stroke at Oak Village Health Center in Lake Jackson, Texas on Monday, 20 January 2014.
She was born in Robertson County on September 5, 1933, near Petteway, Texas. She moved with her family to Clute when she was in elementary school, living with the Mr.& Mrs. Shanks on Shanks Lake. Later, her family moved to their home on South Shanks in Clute, next to the laundry that her mother ran. Dolores graduated from Brazosport High School in 1951. She married Buddy McDougal in January of 1952. Soon after, she and Buddy moved to Freeport, where they raised their two daughters. In1971, they moved to their family's Lake Barbara property, to be closer to care for their mothers.
Dolores was active in her daughter's activities at Alameda Lobella's dance studios. She was an accomplished seamstress and designed many costumes for years. When the Freeport Recreation Association began, she supported the girls and the association in many ways. For many years she assisted with the Freeport High School reunions. Dolores and Buddy were active for years in the Brazosport Dance Club, and the Brazoria Kennel Club. She also served as an officer in T.O.P.S.
Growing up in Clute she worked for Irby's and Reck's Grocery store. Approaching adulthood, she began working as a clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Freeport. She worked for MoPac for 20 years, then took those skills and all that knowledge to Dow Chemical Company's Transportation Department. She always cherished all the friends and families of Missouri Pacific and thought of them as her own. After she retired from Dow, she and Buddy enjoyed traveling all over the USA, especially to Branson, MO.
Dolores is survived by daughters, Jana Rooke (Mark) of Round Rock, Texas and Roya Vallot (Rick) of Pearland, Texas: grandchildren Alison Andrews (Tadashi), James David Rooke, Austin Rooke, Emily Rooke, Douglas Vallot, Cisily Spinks (Devin), and one great grandchild Jacksyn Spinks. Other survivors are her sister-in-law, Sandra McDougal Cooper (Jim) of Gray Court, SC and her many loving nephews and nieces. She is also survived by a brother, a half-brother, half-sisters and cousins. There are many in the community that she considered "family."
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. "Buddy" McDougal in 2001, mother, Millie Raska Poland in 1994, father, Rex Leon Poland, Sr. in 1965.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Angleton Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, 24 Jan 2014, in the Angelina Room, at St. Michaels Church, 100 Oak Drive South, Lake Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the charity or cause of your choice in Dolores' name.
