Joseph Wyatt (Joe) Allen of Lake Jackson, Texas, passed away on July 24, 2014 at Oak Village Nursing Home after a long illness. He was 82.
He was born on Feb. 29, 1932, in Hooks, Texas to the late Nelia D. and Marshall Allen. After graduating Hooks High School, Joe received a track scholarship at East TX State Teacher's College, where he received his bachelor's degree. It is here that he met and married Dorace Raney Allen.
He went on to serve in the Air Force from 1953-1955, and served as captain in the Air Force Reserves until 1968. After completing a master's degree, Joe taught Chemistry and coached football. Later, he worked at Dow Chemical Company in the research department and retired as a Technical Specialist in 1991.
Joe was a Scout Master and a very active member of First Christian Church where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He loved being with family and friends and enjoyed traveling, hunting, sports (particularly golf) and was a gun enthusiast. In his retirement years, long rifles became a central focus, spending time building and refurbishing them. He even served as president of the Greenwood Black Powder Long Rifle Club. Joe was a servant of heart and generous with his time and money.
He is survived by wife, Dorace, and four children: Myra Robison and husband Mike of Tyler, Jay Allen of Lake Jackson, Betty Sterling and husband Dr. Jim of College Station and Nancy Allen of Dallas, also, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren and brothers Troy Allen (wife Jane) of Houston and David Allen (wife Jean) of Irving, three nephews and four nieces.
Visitation will be held at First Christian Church of Lake Jackson at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday July 26th followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Christian Church of Lake Jackson or to the charity of your choice.

Joe was a person who affected the lives of everyone he met with his dignity and his rock-solid faith. A true Biblical scholar, he spoke on matters of faith only after long deliberation. To paraphrase commercials for a financial service company ... "When Joe Allen speaks, everybody listens"

Mr. Allen had a profound effect on many at DeKalb school. I had the privilege of having him for science and as a coach. What a blessing! He was the epitome of a good role model. He demonstrated to us young impressionable kids how to think critically and live fully. The world will not see many of his ilk. He stopped by to see me a few years ago. That really made my day! My condolences to his family.
