After his mother's passing in 1962, John was welcomed into the home of David and Gloria Perkins where he completed high school in Cameron TX. John went on to attend Blinn Junior College and North Texas State as both a student and an athlete earning a degree in Banking and Finance. John later returned to the football field making a career as a high school football coach until his retirement.
It was the enlistment into the Marine Corps in 1969 that brought John the greatest sense of brotherhood, family, and pride. While an active Marine John attended flight training, officer basic school, and saw combat overseas earning a National Defense Service Medal. John was honorably discharged in late 1972 as a First Lieutenant. He went on to serve with the Texas National Guard for many years.
While the Marine Corps was his family, Judy became his home. John met and later married Judy Wickey in 1985. Her quiet strength provided John with unconditional love and support until her death in April of 2024. Judy's absence in his life was deeply felt until his passing on Tuesday, September 30th. His final words were for her.
