Shawn Paul Chaney

Funeral services for Shawn Paul Chaney of Jones Creek, Texas, will be on Friday, May 15th, 2026 at 1:00pm. He died in Jones Creek on Sunday, May 4, at the age of 57.

Born in Fort Bend County, Texas, Shawn was a man of many talents, having worked with special-needs children, as a chemical plant inspector, in the maintenance department for Sweeny ISD and as a handyman with his own business. With a heart of gold, he was always ready to help out family and friends around the house.

Shawn grew up as an avid hunter and fisherman, but it was later in life that he discovered his true passion: birding. He made many friends and was well-respected in the birding community, and he was an accomplished wildlife photographer, with his work published locally and in statewide publications.

Among his other passions were cooking and the Houston Astros. He never missed the chance to watch an Astros game with his beloved wife of 11 years, Cheryl.

Shawn's survivors include wife Cheryl Baker Chaney; daughters Josie and Grayci; stepchildren Samantha and Anthony Perez; stepfather Carl Sperl; granddaughters Audrey and Genisis; siblings Kenny Chaney, Ron Chaney and wife Kelly, Treasa Barta and husband Mark, and Amie Archibeque and husband Brian; and many nieces and nephews. Shawn had a big heart for animals, and he also leaves behind his three corgis, Snoopy, Lexi and Izzy, and his crazy cat, Norman. They all, and the rest of his extended family, will miss him greatly.

Shawn was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Sue Jennings Sperl, and his father, Joe Chaney.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. Donations can be made at gcbo.org. Family and friends attending Shawn's services also can wear their favorite Astros gear in his honor.
