Roger Vernon Drake

Roger Vernon Drake, Sr. passed away with his family by his side at St. Luke Heart Institute in Houston, TX on September 2, 2011.
Roger was born August 14, 1928 in Jonesboro, Texas to Emma Brim and Haskell Drake. His family moved to Lake Jackson in the early 1940's. Speaking several times at the Lake Jackson Historical Museum, he would tell stories about growing up in the swamps of Lake Jackson and what an adventurous life he had. After graduating from Freeport High School in 1946, he joined the United States Marine Corp. where he proudly served his country. Until his death, you could see the pride he had in his country by the American flag he always had flying at his home. After returning to Lake Jackson, he showed his athletic abilities playing for a world champion softball team, The Lake Jackson Gators, in the early fifties. He met the love of his life, Mary Ann Burns, married in 1953, and had 4 children. After working for Dow for 15 years, he pursued many types of careers and was successful in them all. In the late 90's, he retired from U.S. Contractors Safety Dept. and he and Mary Ann moved to Kerrville for several years. They returned to Lake Jackson in 1998.
Roger was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the American Legion. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, grandfather and a genuine friend who will be missed greatly.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Mary Ann Burns Drake, his courageous son, Roger "Sandy" Vernon Drake, Jr; his mother Emma Brim Drake King, father Haskell Drake, step-father Aubrey Lamar King, sister Norma Ruth Drake, and brother Roland Drake.
He is survived by his daughter Ellen Drake Hill, sons Randy Drake and wife Josie, Scott Drake and wife Alyson brother Richard "Dick" Drake and wife Maudlyn, sister-in-law LaVeta Drake, grandchildren Ryan and Brittany Hill, Lindsey and Landon Drake and Kristyn Ganze, Kymber and Kyle Drake and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.



Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson, TX, located at 98 N. Dixie Drive.

The family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday at the Lakewood Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Henry Brim, Don Norman, Ryan Hill, Donald Pollard, R.M. Dick Drake, and Freddie Brown.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of his "Coffee shop" McDonald's buddies.
