Richard Edwin Mangum
10/16/2013

Richard was born on May 5, 1926, in Bay City, Texas, to Robert and Annie Mangum. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Evelyn, to whom he was married for 48 years; as well as his parents; three sisters, Ruby Mock, Ruth Arnold, and Hazel Springer; brother, Ray Mangum; and daughter, Juanita Lebeuf.

He is survived by daughters Janice Colwell and husband Ron; Jackie Phelps and husband Ronnie; son in law, Flo Lebeuf; seven adoring grandchildren - Ricky, Robbin, Troy, Kristin, Kevin, Elaine, and Renee; and ten great grandchildren Brooklyn, Kaylin, Seth, Blake, Conner, Elizabeth, Evan, Ethan, Edan, Maggie, and one on the way.

At the age of 17, Richard decided he wanted to join the U.S. Navy. He was told by recruiters that he needed to gain some weight before he could join, so he promptly got hired on a dredge boat where they ate eight meals per day, so he could gain the weight which he did. Richard proudly served the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Goss during WWII. After his time in the service, he was an active and lifetime member of District 16, Post 8576 of the Veterans Of Foreign War, where he also served as Post Commander. Richard also served as a member of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department. He and his wife, Evelyn, moved to the Freeport area when he began his employment with Dependable Motor Parts. Richard later became part owner in Parts, Incorporated, in Freeport, and then became manager at Rent-It/Grace Equipment where he worked until retirement. Richard enjoyed fishing, gardening, and baking. He loved spending weekends with his family on the water. After retirement, he and Evelyn loved traveling in their motorhome from Texas to Michigan and all over the United States.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Woodlake Nursing Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for their love and care.
