On Monday, December 7, 2020, Lelia Beth Wilkinson passed away at the age of 94. Beth was born on August 29, 1926, to Dr. James A. Wilkinson and wife, Mabel, in Blooming Grove, TX.
She received her degree in chemistry from the University of Texas. Her career as a chemist led her to become one of the first women in that field. She was a member of the American Chemical Society for fifty years.
Beth was preceded in death by her brother, Jim who was a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical. After her first job in west Texas with Mobil Oil, she accepted a position with Dow and joined Jim and her mother in Freeport, TX.
There she became an active member in the First United Methodist Church. Beth was an avid sports fan who followed the Texas Longhorns and Texans with enthusiasm. Masters Bridge and travel were an integral part of her life.
She was a remarkable woman who leaves behind a legacy of generosity as well as memories of her quick wit and great intellect.
Survivors are Elmin Howell and Pamela Douglas, cousins.
Funeral services for Lelia Beth Wilkinson will be held at 2pm on Thursday, January 7, 2020 at Hamilton Beeman Cemetery in Corsicana, TX, with Andy Dill officiating.
