It is with an incredibly heavy heart and a mountain full of love, that I must announce the passing of Scean Charles Smith, of Clute, TX. He passed peacefully in his sleep on May 29, 2026. Born October 3, 1963, Scean is preceded in death by his father, Richard Smith and his mother, Jody Smith and his sister, Kathy Lacy. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Gina Mangel-Smith, whom he loved more than life itself.
Additionally survived by five children: Caitlin Jones, Brandon Mangel, Anthony Mangel (Jacquelyn), Michael Mangel, William Sharron(Monique), seven grandchildren: Daisy Jones, Walker Jones, Heather Dawn-Marie Mangel, Chance Mangel, Harlie Mangel, Gibson Mangel, Gabrielle Sharron, Christina Sharron & Damien Sharron, two siblings: Ayla Douglas (Jim) and Heather Johnson (Steve), and seven nieces & nephews: Grant Gridely, Berniece Savoia, Wayne Scanlan, Ginger Edgecombe, Becky Pruitt, Tige Burk, Joni Turner.
Scean served in the United States Navy as a Submariner on the USS Sturgeon SSN-637 as a Quartermaster Petty officer 3rd Class. The Sturgeon was the lead ship of her class of 37 nuclear-powered fast attack submarines. Colloquially known as the 637 class, these boats were the primary workhorse for the Navy during the high stakes decades of the Cold War. The Sturgeon prioritized stealth and utilizing advanced electronic intelligence-gathering equipment. The crews’ main objectives were ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), Special Warfare Support, and Tactical testing and Mining. The Sturgeon was exceptional at denying adversarial countries from operating covertly along friendly borders. The USS Sturgeon was often deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean and Northern Polar Ice Caps.
Scean built his legacy in being a Master Builder, building homes for families, while also helping friends, family and seniors when they needed construction help. Scean built residential and industrial structures from the ground up. Known for his compassionate leadership, Scean was a cornerstone of knowledge to many throughout his career. His very greatest pride, however, was his large, beautiful family he left behind.
