Verna Ruth Tannery, age 81 passed away September 23, 2018, at CHI St, Luke's Hospital in Lake Jackson, TX . She was born on September 25, 1936 in Freeport, TX . to Newman "Fred" Shirl Holder and Alma Ruth Holder. She married the love of her life, Gene Paul Tannery in 1953. Verna began working for the Dow Chemical Company as a secretary in the 1950's. She steadily worked her way up the chain of command to become one of the first department supervisors without a college degree. Verna retired at the age of 50. In her retirement, Verna travelled to all 50 states, several islands in the Caribbean and France. She also took up quilting as her primary hobby. Her quilts won many awards including multiple Best In Show awards. Verna was also very adventurous. She took up scuba diving, went on hot air balloon rides, and even went skydiving. She was always positive and had a smile that would light up a room. She is survived by daughter Delia Akers and husband Chuck of Tomball son Cary Tannery of Lake Jackson daughter in-law Laura Martin of Houston seven grand-children and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at the First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson on Thursday September 27, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception.
