Dear Watts family, praying for you all and looking forward to that blessed day of reunion in our eternal home. I think of Mary every time I play "There is a Fountain" on the piano. You all were a precious part of my childhood and I treasure every memory. Love in Christ,

Dear Connie, Sharon, and Lisa,

As I write this, I am headed across the State of Iowa. It is dawn. The sun is bursting over the green growth and expanse of the Midwest. While noticing the beauty of this time and season, my mind is wandering back to another season - a time when I was blessed to be in the company and service with you, your family, and your wonderful mother, Mary.

Soon you will lay your mother to rest. As I ponder the finality of this act, I am reminded of the many ways the tapestry of our lives intersect across the span of time. The intersections of our lives are so often encounters intended to light our way, mark a path, remind us to whom we belong, to encourage, to admonish, to hand from one generation to the next a torch, a baton, the gift of life. A new day. A sun rise, a sun set - "in your coming and going" as the scriptures say. Mary was such a beacon of light to what was a shy and introverted guitar player from Iowa. I am forever in her debt. I offer this simple note with much love and appreciation to the memory of your dear mother, Mary.

Whether it was helping me hold back tears or joining me with bursts of laughter, Mary (our road Mom) attended to all. She, in particular, mentored me in ways that have forged much of my journey. Kicking me off the bus and making me "mix and mingle", counseling me on dating, encouraging me to order the extra Big Mac when three wasn't enough to satisfy my appetite, helping me shop for clothes, helping me find my own voice, imparting the scriptural basis for being a gentleman and man of God, helping me find my way - these are but some of the ways Mary touched my life. She touched so many lives.

I always knew a life lesson was about to be imparted, however welcomed or not, whenever Mary would add a "y" to the ends of our name: Marky, Brucey, Blakey, Jeffy, etc... If the "Y" got dropped and your formal name and middle initial was used, you knew you had just better stop and listen (Mark J., Leonard, etc...). Her "perch and pulpit" was a small couch immediately behind the drivers seat of the bus and it gave her broad authority and control that, as a driver, I and the others could not escape. She had the uncanny ability to multi-task like no other. While we flew down interstates she could prepare letters on a typewriter, collate marketing packets, instruct the girls on how to apply their makeup (the girls would be in the back of the bus - 40 feet away and out of sight - but, she just knew...), observe my driving and offer any form of instruction all while sitting in the front of the bus and never leaving her perch. It never mattered where you were, Mary could get to you. Thank God, sincerely, she got to me. Many of the hospitality and cordiality skills she taught me, about how to deal with others in a Christ like way, I use to this day and have sought to instill into my own children. Truly, she changed my life - for the better.

While I am, regrettably, unable to join you in these days, I am no less with you in spirit and mourning. Susan and I offer you our deepest condolences and heart felt sympathies. While laid to rest, the light of her life will continue to point the way for so many of us and for generations to come. In the time it has taken me to write this, things are brighter. Know that your lives shine the warmth of her light. There are so many who are blessed to have shared the warmth of Mary's light on our path. I am deeply grateful for her, her testimony, and friendship. Blessings, comfort, and peace to you all.

With deep and fond affection,

mark

I happened to see your lovely mum passed away in The Facts... I am so sorry to hear this. Mary Watts, I remember as a child, her beautiful piano playing at Calvary Baptist Church. Connie, Sharon, Lisa, my childhood friends at church. One particular memory is a birthday party for Connie at their house. I simply just remember having so much fun. I loved your parents dearly and I love you, girls, today. CBC was blessed with your singing on Sundays! What a special blessing God gave to Calvary Baptist.
