Elton Berry was born in Goose Creek, Texas, the son of W.W. and Allyne Berry. The family moved to Thorndale and later to Taylor, Texas. His siblings were Weldon Berry and Joan Rutherford.

He is survived by his wife Joanne Berry and daughters Jeanne Landacre and Suzanne Berry-Little (Kevin) and granddaughters Paige Simpkins, Tori Simpkins and Emma Houston. Also, surviving him are his sister Joan Rutherford, sister-in-law Betty Randig, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elton graduated from Taylor High School in 1962. He made good grades and excelled in sports - football, shot put and baseball. He served as Tri-Captain of both football and track teams. In 1967 he graduated from Texas A&M with a B.S. in Animal Science.

Elton and Joanne were married on June 1, 1964 in Taylor. In the fall they moved to College Station where Elton attended Texas A&M, graduating in 1967 with a B.S. in Animal Science. The family relocated to Lake Jackson with nine-month-old daughter Jeanne. Elton began his 30-year career with Dow as a Research Technician, primarily in Organic Products Research. Suzanne was born in 1968. The family became members of St. Mark Lutheran Church in 1967 and continued until his death, serving in many roles at St. Mark. Elton began building the family home in 1972. He first built a small version and then soon began the "big house" which he finished in 1979. There was now time for hobbies shooting, canoeing, hiking, leather goods, etc. He was a member of Greenwood Gun Club where he made long-time friends. Elton was a great Dad and encouraged his daughters to excel in their studies and interests and most of all he brought them up in the church.

Elton would have a family of girls two daughters and three granddaughters -- Paige, Emma, and Tori who were born in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Now he took on the important role of mentoring more girls and he spent a lot of time photographing, fishing, and teaching the granddaughters.

Elton had strong friendships with many people. He enjoyed his Dow friends and said that he enjoyed every day of work. There were church friends and activities. There were many close friends with whom he enjoyed shooting, hiking and canoeing. There were many trips to Big Bend and Grand Canyon and also weekly visits to the gun range. He made years of trips to Camp Perry, Ohio for competitive shooting.

Elton was an interesting person and easily made friends. Once he met you he never forgot your name or where or when you met. His memory was amazing even until the end. He loved to talk and enjoyed everyone. He was loved and admired by many. He will especially be greatly missed by his family. He was a great Husband, Dad and Grandfather. We thank him for his strength, his optimism and his love. Well done, good and faithful servant. Rest in peace.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 501 Willow Drive, Lake Jackson, at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 10.

I'm sad to just learn of this. I was a shooting friend of Elton's and rode back from Camp Perry to Houston one year in the early 80s with him. He was one of the shooters who made a good and lasting impression on me during my formative years. I'm glad I knew you, Elton; God rest your soul.

Had the opportunity to hike Grand Canyon and make a couple of Rio Grande lower canyon canoeing trips with "Bear". You learn a lot about a person spending time around a campfire. His stories were amassing and his passion for every endeavor he took on. Will be missed.

Bear was such a great person and a true force of nature. I will never forget our many canoe trips down the Colorado, Brazos and Rio Grande rivers. The trips on the Rio Grande through Big Bend National Park were the most memorable. Trips of a lifetime with great people. He will be sorely missed, he was one of the good ones. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time. It was my honor to know Bear.

I moved to LJ in 1989.I had 4 kids and we camped alot . I needed a canoe and every day I passed by on old Angleton road saw several canoes in one place. So I found my way back and visited this mans house. He came out of his shop barefooted. I also barefooted asked about buying a canoe. NOPE was my answer and he turned and walked back in his shop. So not willing to be so quickly rejected I followed this guy and 2 hours later left with NO canoe but the most interesting man I ever met.I can't list all he had going on but his quest for knowledge and willingness to chase it was boundless.

As Larry Smock mentioned, I first met Bear when I was about 12 years old and I was the Berry's paper boy. We all grew up together in a small Lake Jackson neighborhood where he was our friend, mentor and "guidance counselor". When I first met Bear, I went home and told my Mom "I think I met Tarzan". He involved us in outdoor activities my Dad never could, such as archery, camping, canoeing, etc. Later in life, we traveled many miles to rifle matches and had countless conversations.
Mrs. B, Jeanne and Suzanne, you know how I feel about Elton and your Dad. There are no words to describe how much I will miss him. Until we meet again.

Uncle Elton was a strong man. Some of my greatest memories are the trip Chris and I took hiking the Grand Canyon with him and his friends - what an adventure! His stories and photos will be missed. Thinking and praying for you all during this hard time.

Elton was a long time friend always willing to help. He was one of the best kind of friend a person could have, one who is always there no matter what.

I first met Elton (also known to his friends as Bear or Super Bear) when I was about 13 years old and have been close friends for 53 years. He was about 10 years older than me and became a friend, mentor and life coach to me. Be had a big heart and would gladly assist anyone that needed help. Hard to find words to describe how much his friendship met to me. He was like a father figure to me and will be dearly missed.

I remember you well, Elton! First met Joanne in 1974 at the Poly-Amines plant. Then met Elton. We shot together and served on the Greenwood Gun Club board together. Many stories swapped and many more lived together.
Thank you, Elton, for being a friend, and thank you Joanne for sharing him with us!
