Having lived and been raised during the Great Depression days of the 1930's, he learned the simple life was very good and enjoyed the simplest of things like visiting with family and friends, playing 42 or Canasta and eating simple meals, especially fried catfish, corn on the cob, watermelon and figs being among his favorites. Max graduated from Bay City High School in 1941, his high school motto was "Never do today what you can do tomorrow" and this motto remained true for his entire life. He then joined the U.S. Navy in the V-12 Program in 1943 during World War II. He attended T.C.U., Rice University and S.M.U. and upon graduating from S.M.U. received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Also, Max earned a Superintendents and Principals Certificate by the Department of Education both issued in 1948 while also obtaining his Registered Professional Land Surveyor (1948) and a State Land Licensed Surveyor (1952) certifications and his Texas Real Estate Broker's License in 1956. Max opened his first land surveying office in Dallas and Odessa before settling down in Lake Jackson, Texas in 1951. He was inducted into the Imperial Council of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, El Mina Temple of Galveston, Texas on April 25, 1953.
In Lake Jackson, he continued in opening various businesses: Circle Way Music Shop, Children's Boutique, Town & Country Motors, A-Z Masonry (Industry Masonry Contractor, which he built NASA's Building 45 completed on February 28, 1966), Hagan Town & Country Real Estate and Max Hagan Surveying and Engineering as well as some early entrepreneur ventures in selling pizzas and pizza ovens, bomb shelter installations, car dealer and acquiring real estate to develop. He earned many accreditations, to name a few: MLS Chairman and founder of MLS program for Brazoria County, President of the Brazoria County Board of Realtors (two terms), Brazoria County Honorary Lifetime Director, TREPAC Lifetime Member, TAR "200" Year Anniversary Committee, Director of the Texas Association of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors Vice-president of Region X (two terms), National Association of Realtors State and Municipal Legislative Committee, Board Member of the Texas Windstorm Association, Appointed Member of the Local, Texas and National Legislative Committees for the Private and Public Property Rights of Land Use , Appointed first Liaison between the Texas Association of Realtors and Texas Society of Professional Land Surveyors and many other accomplishments. Max was a current member of the First Baptist Church, Clute, Texas and the Charity Sunday School Class.
Max was a very loved and admired husband, father, grandfather, son and friend to all he would meet. He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Betty; his loving daughter, Maxelle Hagan Singletary and husband, Terry, and their sons, Braxton and Cade; his children by marriage, Kathy Neely Bollom and husband, Gerry and son, Jerred and his children; Kelly Neely Cooper and husband, Rick, and their children; Kassy Neely Acree and husband, Cabell and their daughter, Marguerite Neely; Jimmie Neely and wife, Rhonda and their two daughters, Morgan and Taylor; Pud Rutledge and wife, Jeri and their children.
Public visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home in the Chapel Room, located at #98 North Dixie Drive, Lake Jackson, Texas, 77566 on Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Clute, Texas with Brother Duane Phy and Brother Lyndon Pettijohn officiating. Burial with full Military Honors will follow at the Old West Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia, the town of his birth.
Pallbearers will be Robert Canales, John Cone, Steve Cone, Leonard Olshovsky, John Kwan, and Jerrel Crosson. Honorary pallbearers are Terry Singletary, Braxton Singletary, Cade Singletary, Jimmy Neely, Cabell Acree, Gerry Bollom, Pud Rutledge, Art Imperial and all the men of the Charity Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church in Clute.
It's the family's belief Max has joined the Lord, his parents, relatives, and his dear friends, especially his lifelong friends, Clyde Cone and Jay Andrews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Clute, Texas or the charity of one's choice.

I have been in the windstorm inspection business for almost 20 years and got to know Max almost as long ago. When I started with the Texas Department of Insurance, Max was one of a handful of windstorm engineers. There are now hundreds. Having been in charge of TDI's oversight program for Brazoria County, I got to know all of the engineers who were doing windstorm inspections. Although we were supposed to be impartial, Max was one of my favorites. He never once argued with me and was always willing to listen. He was pleasant to talk to and I always enjoyed his company. After I left TDI and started my own firm, Max and I continued to "talk windstorm". He would always ask me "is there anything I can do for you?" I will certainly miss him.

I have fond memories of my dad's (Aubrey Gupton)cousin Max. Every time I saw him, as a child, he would always say to me, "I bet you don't even know who I am," to which I always replied, "You're Max!" He would also always tell me he had an old home movie of me as a baby, scooting across the floor. I never got to see it. (Anyone still have it?) My Dad, his sister and all of their brothers have been reunited in Heaven with their cousin and childhood playmate, Max Hagan. Max, the only child of my grandmother Eula Meadows Gupton's sister, Minnie Meadows Hagan and her husband Pete Hagan, was born the same year as my Uncle Hank (1922) and one year after my dad, Rex Gupton. My own childhood was filled with wonderful memories of family gatherings that were often highlighted by visits in West Columbia from Max and Maxelle and Aunt Minnie and Uncle Pete. It was a great honor to have Max Hagan as my cousin, mentor and friend throughout my life. I loved him and will miss him dearly. Rest in peace, Max! And to Betty, Maxelle, Terry and the rest of Max's family, you all have my most sincere sympathies.
