Donna D. Hicks, age 75, of Lake Jackson, Texas, went to be with her Lord Jesus on January 31, 2024 after battling double pneumonia. A memorial service for her will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 24 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 501 Willow Drive, Lake Jackson, Texas with Pastor Terrance Adamson officiating. Donna's request to be cremated was honored by her husband, Roy L. Hicks, and two sons, Todd Nichols and Sean Hicks.
Early visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 am in the St. Mark Lutheran Church narthex.
Donna was born on October 20, 1948 in Whitney, Texas. She was the youngest of four children. Donna grew up with her family on their farm. She loved vegetable gardening with her mother and helping her dad with farm chores. She attended school in Whitney, Texas and graduated in 1966 as class Valedictorian. Donna was a strong Christian, devoted to Jesus Christ all her life. She was the first baby baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, Texas.
Donna was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran. She served her congregation by volunteering on several boards and committees for more than fifty years. She was also the congregation's representative for the Texas District Church Extension Fund with the Lutheran Church. She served as Financial Liaison with Texas Church Extension Fund during the construction of the new Fellowship Hall for St. Mark.
Donna worked at Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas for 32 years beginning in 1970 as a secretary. She later took night classes in chemistry at the local college to advance her career which helped her become an Area specialist in the Industrial Hygiene Department and then Technical Specialist in the Environmental Department. Donna retired in 2002 and continued her love of gardening by raising roses, day lilies, ginger plants, plumeria and many other flowers. Donna and Roy loved their travels to Australia, New Zealand, England, Greece, Turkey, France and Italy.
Donna is survived by Roy L. Hicks, her husband for 50 years, and son Todd Nichols, his wife Tess, of Cedar Park, Texas and second son, Sean Hicks and his lovely friend, Nikki Becraft of Frisco, Texas. Donna and Roy have three grandsons, Cody Nichols, 24 yrs. old, Maximillian Hicks, 9 yrs. old and Frederick Hicks, 6 yrs. old. She is also survived by her oldest brother August Degner and wife JoAnn from Brenham, TX.
She is preceded in death by her parents Bill and Orene Degner of Whitney, a second brother Charles Degner, a resident of Elkins Lake in Huntsville, an older sister, Barbara Penney of Richwood, and her niece, Tina Penney.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, 501 Willow Drive, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566 or to the local Salvation Army, PO Box 2029, Freeport, Texas 77542.

I consulted with Donna several times about industrial hygiene during our careers at Dow. I remember her as always being cheerful, kind, and patient. Her life exuded the fruit of the Spirit. I pray for peace and comfort for your family as you continue your journey through this life without her by your side. I pray that you experience reassurance that she is among "a great cloud of witnesses" that surrounds us and is cheering us on as we complete our race. May pleasant memories and joyful expectation of reunion with her comfort you in the midst of your grief. - Curtis Swisher
