Leona Marie (Conkle) Hubbell, 85, of Lake Jackson, went to be with our Lord, Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the Oak Village HealthCare nursing home.

She was born April 27, 1926, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Fred and Edna (Mowery) Conkle.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Reed Hubbell; her brother, John Conkle.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Gill, of Wapakoneta, Ohio; her daughter, Sharon Moore and husband, Zack, of Lake Jackson; son, Leslie Hubbell and wife, Linda, of Houston; her grandchildren, Gina Baron, Ned Baron and wife, Julie, and Kelle Hubbell; and by her great-grandchildren, Tyler Ince, Jackson Kimbrough, Brent Hubbell and Mackenzie Baron.

Leona loved being a mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her time spent helping her children and grandchildren with their many activities which included Bluebirds, Boy Scouts, Little League, and numerous school activities.

She was an active member of the PTA when her children were young. For many years, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Jackson and a member of that church's Women's Circle.

In recent years, she attended St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with her friends from the Carriage Inn.

When her children began to attend high school, Leona went to work for the Brazosport Independent School District. Later she worked for the W.R. Grace Company until she retired in 1978.

She enjoyed square dancing and for many years, she and her late husband were members of the Promenaders. She also enjoyed sewing and made all of her square dancing outfits.

Her late husband's career required many moves to numerous towns, first Ohio, then Florida, and later in Texas; Dallas, San Antonio, Freeport and Lake Jackson. Leona loved gardening and had a beautiful yard in each town that her family called home. She also enjoyed decorating and every home her family lived in reflected her personality and her love for her home and family.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.

A reception will follow the service. She will be buried next to her husband in the Restwood Memorial Park.
