Veronica Matocha Bohuslav, age 93, passed away on December 24, 2025. She was born to Adolph and Helen Matocha, in Hostyn, Texas, on July 9, 1932. The fourth of five children, she graduated from La Grange High School in 1950 and graduated from Durham's Business College in 1952.
Veronica was blessed with a large, loving family. She married Gilbert Bohuslav on September 11, 1955, just five days after he got out of the Army. They moved to San Marcos for him to complete his college degree, while she worked at a bank to support them. One year later, they welcomed their first son and moved to Freeport, Texas, for Gilbert to begin his teaching career. They had two more sons and three daughters in Freeport, before moving to Lake Jackson in 1969.
Veronica loved her family dearly and loved spending countless hours cooking, cleaning and organizing. She enjoyed calling herself a ''domestic engineer'' and was the glue that kept her large, active household on track. She never missed her children's school functions, while always encouraging them to try their best and be a friend to all. She loved her church as well, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and one of the original members of the weekly Chapel Ministry at St. Michael the Archangel Church. She was an active member of the KJZT (Czech Catholic Women) and enjoyed playing monthly Bunco and 42 dominoes with their longtime friends from Freeport and Lake Jackson. One of her callings in life for over thirty years was visiting and bringing communion to church members who were in the hospital or homebound. She was nominated by St. Michael's Parish Council and was honored to receive the Heart of Gold Award by His Love in 1987. This award was only given out this one year to community volunteers that embodied the spirit of selflessness, compassion and a true passion for making a difference in the lives around them.
Veronica is survived by her children, Dwayne Bohuslav (Joanne) of San Antonio, Texas, Yvonne Thornton (John) of Wichita Falls, Texas, Pam Gardner Taylor (Gene) of Phoenix, Arizona, Roger Bohuslav (Marcela) of Buda, Texas, and Michele Lancelot (David) of Weston, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce Bohuslav, of Austin. She was the best Granny to ten grandchildren, who will miss her constant involvement in their lives and the wisdom and counsel she shared with them always. Two of her favorite sayings were ''Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved,'' and ''You have to be a friend, to have a friend.'' Veronica's grandchildren always looked forward to her amazing cooking each time they visited, especially her chicken noodle soup made with homemade noodles and her endless supply of kolaches! Her grandchildren are Josh Thornton (Jesse), Lindsay Thornton Casey (Lance), Alex Gardner Porter (Jack), Ray Bohuslav, Cooper Gardner, Grey Gardner, Grace Lancelot, Kate Lancelot, Jack Lancelot and Michael Bohuslav. She was also very proud of her eight great-grandchildren (with one more on the way) and loved the priceless time she spent with them. She also shared a special bond with her friend and sitter, Tina Prevost, who helped her make the most of each day!
Veronica is preceded in death by Gilbert, her loving husband of 69 years; and Michael Gerard Bohuslav, her special-needs son who died when he was nine years old. She is also preceded by her parents; her sisters, Bernice Janda and her husband, Ben; her sister, Georgia Holub and her husband, Frank; her brother, Adolph Matocha Jr. and his wife, Helen; her sister, Lil Nash, and Gilbert's two siblings and brother-in-law.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, with the Holy Rosary service beginning at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, with lunch afterwards, followed by a burial service in Hostyn, Texas, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 4:00 p.m.
If desired, friends may make a memorial contribution to the building fund at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 936 FM 2436, La Grange, TX 78945.
