Funeral services for Addie Jean Carr, 90, of Houston, Texas, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, with Bryan Shippey officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:30 AM.
Born in Houston on March 8, 1935, Jean was a proud graduate of Milby High School. She served her community for many years as a high school secretary before retiring from Brazosport ISD. A woman of faith and community, she was also a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Jean's life was defined by her unwavering devotion to her family. Following the loss of her daughter, Sheri, she stepped in with boundless love to help raise her grandchildren, Stephen, Scott, and Tiffany. Her 1,100-square-foot home on Cannon Street was the heart of the family; despite its size, it always managed to hold the 16-plus members of her brood and the neighboring Clifton family. These gatherings were fueled by her legendary cooking and the simple joy of having "all her kids" under one roof.
An adventurous spirit, Jean loved to travel. She shared memorable Alaskan cruises and trips up the Eastern Seaboard with her brother and sister-in-law. Her travels took her from the Smoky Mountains to the Rockies and the shores of Lake Tahoe. She also never turned down a trip to Louisiana to try her luck at the casinos and enjoy a good Bloody Mary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Carr; her parents, A.B. and Flora Carpenter; her daughter, Sheri Adams; her siblings, Thelma Louise Sinclair and Donald Carpenter; and her granddaughter, Tiffany Thorn.
Jean is survived by her children: Steve (Rhonda) Lawrence, Larry (Beverly) Lawrence, and Susan Roy. She leaves behind a rich legacy through her grandchildren: Jodi (Bryan) Shippey, Brittianny (Ricky) Keese, Jana (Buddy) Kimberlin, Steven (Alana) Evans, Scott (Megan) Evans, and Courtney (Justin) Rose. Her memory will also be cherished by her 22 great-grandchildren: Scarlett, Carter, Kirby, Wynnie, and Polly Shippey; Kelbeigh and Cameren Keese; Eli and Miller Kimberlin; Brooke Clifton; Josh, Brandon, Sophie, and Brielle Evans; Elliemay, Wyatt, and Walker Evans; Ace, Jackson, and Max Rose; and Emery and Ralyn Graves.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
