Roger was born in 1944 at the original Dow Hospital and spent nearly his entire life in Lake Jackson, a community deeply rooted in his family's history. His parents were Lake Jackson charter members and among the town's original and earliest residents. Roger proudly carried on that legacy, building a life defined by hard work, service, and connection.
For 42 years, Roger was the devoted husband of his beloved wife, Patty. He was a proud and loving father to Kara Gilliam, and a cherished ''Pawpaw'' to his grandsons, Jared and Aiden. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Monical; his brother-in-law, Billy Loveless (Stacy); sister-in-law Judi Pepper (Paul); nieces Tammy Blevins (Buck) and Penny Daigle (Rod); and nephew Harold Monical, Jr. (Natalie); along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He also remained close to his stepsons, Joey and Michael Garrett. He was proceeded in death by his parents, E.A. and Arlean Penney, parents-in-law Bill and Dee Loveless, brother-in-law Harold Monical, Sr., and great-nephew Josh Daigle.
A man who could build or fix almost anything, Roger's talents were matched only by his willingness to help others. Whether he was constructing a custom entertainment center when the perfect one couldn't be found, mowing ditches for neighbors, or using his tractor to clear debris after storms, he was always the first to lend a hand. His kindness and dependability made him a cornerstone of his community. He was even jokingly called the ''Angel of Carriage Inn,'' as he always seemed to appear whenever help was needed. Most importantly, however, Roger spent his life assisting friends and family members in their times of need. It was always obvious that friends and family came first.
Roger's lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles began at an early age, working alongside his father at the family car lot in downtown Lake Jackson. By 13, he had built his first car, a 1946 Ford assembled from parts of several others. A dedicated enthusiast, he favored Chevrolets, starting with a '57 Chevy in high school. He was an active member of local car clubs and the Harley-Davidson Owners Group, and he found great joy attending car and motorcycle shows, where he earned many of the awards that filled the area in his garage that he referred to as his ''I Love Me Wall.''
In addition to his mechanical talents, Roger was a skilled pipefitter and business co-owner, operating Brazos, Pipe and Steel for 45 years. He also shared his knowledge as an instructor, teaching pipefitting for more than five years. Earlier in life, he attended Wharton Junior College and earned a rodeo scholarship to Texas A&I University.
Roger embraced life fully and simply. He loved dancing, camping and floating the river at Garner State Park and New Braunfels, and spending evenings on the porch visiting with family and friends. He never met a stranger, often striking up conversations with fellow enthusiasts and forming lifelong friendships. He also found joy in everyday routines, especially watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
A dedicated volunteer, Roger gave generously of his time, particularly to the Special Olympics, where he helped organize fundraisers and events. Known for his commitment and humor, he once quite literally sold the shirt off his wife's back to ensure someone could have the last available one.
Above all, Roger will be remembered for his deep love of family, his generous spirit, and his ability to make others feel seen, valued, and cared for. His life was one of service, laughter, and lasting impact. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
The public viewing and visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Dr, Lake Jackson. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Cynthia Myers officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
