Leila Ann Cunningham Bain, 90 of Lake Jackson passed away peacefully Monday, May 18, 2026. Ann was born May 21, 1935, in Abingdon, Virginia to Leila Carlton Barnes and John Sullins ''Gus'' Cunningham. Ann was raised in Abingdon, Virginia and attended William King High School where she graduated as Valedictorian. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. and attended secretarial school. Upon completion, she became the secretary to the former Ambassador to Japan, Joseph Grew. While working in Washington, D.C., she met the love of her life, Jesse Leonard Bain, Jr. at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. They married in Abingdon, Virginia on August 25, 1956, and were happily married for 64 years until Jesse's passing in 2021. For their honeymoon, Jesse moved them to Austin, Texas where Jesse completed his master's degree. Soon after, they moved to Silsbee, Texas where they welcomed their two daughters, LeeAnn and Beverly Kate. In 1968, the family moved to Lake Jackson for Jesse's career where Ann thrived as a homemaker, raising her two daughters. Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, Gigi, and friend. She was a member of Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson where she was involved in organizing weddings and funerals. Ann was an active member of the Lake Jackson Citizens' Police Academy. She also enjoyed needlepointing, knitting, painting, singing in musicals, and playing the piano. However, Ann enjoyed taking care of her granddaughters, and great-grandchildren the most.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Joe Hortenstine, loving husband Jesse, and sister in-law, Monna Jo Hortenstine.

Ann is survived by her daughters, LeeAnn Bain Mathews (Tommy) and Beverly Bain; granddaughters, Jessica Mathews and Ashley Mathews Pena (Adam); great-grandchildren, Kaylah San Miguel, Jacelyn and Landon Santimauro; brothers Joel Hortenstine and Jan Hortenstine (Sara); as well as numerous extended family and friends.

We would like to thank the Memory Care staff at Carriage Inn and Choice Hospice for taking such good care of our mom.

A memorial celebrating Ann's life will be held at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 102 Yaupon, Lake Jackson on Tuesday, May 26th at 11:00 A.M.
