Henry Leon Buchanan, 82, a well-known community leader and avid horseman was born to Alvin and Setella Buchanan in Carthage, Texas, He passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Angleton-Danbury Hospital after a lengthy illness of cancer and alzheimers. His family was by his side when he drifted off to be with our Lord. Leon graduated from Pasadena H.S. and joined the Air Force immediately after. After leaving the Air Force, Leon went on to begin his career in finance with Great Western Finance in Pasadena, TX and later relocated to Freeport, Texas. Years later he joined First Freeport National Bank where he served as Senior Loan Officer and Executive Vice President. Leon made many friends while working there. Up until recent times his old customers would approach him to personally thank him for helping them. He was considered a true and caring friend. After 20 years of working for the bank and upon his retirement in 1981, Leon Buchanan went on to establish Buchanan Oldsmobile and Jeep Dealership in Freeport, TX.
Mr. Buchanan played a great role in assisting the City of Freeport during Hurricane Carla in 1962. He assisted the Chief of Police during this disaster.
He had a special interest in helping the youth of Brazosport. He volunteered to work with the Junior Achievement Association where he became an instructor. Leon Buchanan was also very involved with FFA, 4H Clubs, youth horse shows and rodeos. He worked to improve their leadership skills, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. He served as President of the Brazoria County Fair Association and as a Committee Member and Ambassador of The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was also a lifetime member of numerous horse and cattleman's associations.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 21 years, who dedicated her time after retirement to assist him during his lengthy illness. He will be missed by his only sister, Mabel Baird of Pasadena. He also leaves behind a son, Rick Reynolds, (Kathy) from Oregon and also a daughter Vicki Green (David) from West Columbia and Theresa Townes from Dallas. Other family members to mourn their grandfather's passing include Audrey, Caitlyn, R. Leon, Liz Reynolds, Philip W. Ellison. To be included are Jake and Ryan Roghair.
His surviving stepchildren are Cindy Cisneros,Sandy Wagner (Ray),Sadie McMillan (Rusty)and Alan Cisneros and their children.

A memorial service is being conducted by Lakewood Funeral Home and will be taking place on Saturday, March 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The family will begin receiving visitors at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers,the family asks that donations be made to The American Cancer Society or Alzheimers' Association.

I worked with Leon for a number of years as his secretary while at the First Freeport National Bank. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a very special person and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. I will keep the family in my prayers.
