Joyce Girouard passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at her daughter's home in Richardson, TX. Joyce was a life-long resident of Freeport having been born there on October 15, 1924, the only child of Leo and Mary Exa Leggett. She graduated from Freeport High School and attended Sam Houston State University and the University of Texas-Austin. She and Bob Girouard married in 1946 and they were married for 64 years.
She is survived by four children, Maureen Moore, Robbie Thompson, Vicki Coker and Mark Girouard, eleven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Terry Girouard; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Girouard; as well as many nephew and nieces.
God and her family were her greatest loves. She was a member of the Freeport Church of Christ where she taught the Ladies Bible class for many years. She was a writer and several of her articles were published in the Gospel Advocate.
Joyce loved the beach and was able to realize her dream of having a beach house at Surfside. She loved reading and being a "Friend of the Library". She loved quilting and doing hand work. She was a member of the garden club and loved working in her yard. She loved going to hear the Houston symphony with her son, Mark, as well as going to the Alley Theater.
One of Joyce's greatest joys was travel. She loved the Northeast and made several trips to Maine and Vermont. She also traveled to the British Isles, Norway and Vienna.
A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson, TX and a graveside service at the Sweeny Cemetery in Sweeny, TX, at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Freeport library or the charity of your choice.

Thinking of The Girouard Family, all of you, with love and prayers. I worked with Joyce in the Volunteer Reading Program at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School in Jones Creek. She was devoted to the "little readers" and they loved her as well. She was a lovely lady and a positive influence to children and adults!

Joyce was a wonderful person and I really enjoyed working with both Bobby and Joyce for the good of the Freeport Library. They were both wonderful supporters of the library and made my job easier in all ways. I will miss them both. Cathy Threadgill Director of the Brazoria County Library System

Joyce was a fun Mom. I remember enjoying being in her home as Vicki's friend. We need more like her. She was a blessing.

Joyce was a Christian in Word (teaching Bible classes for many years) and deed (always giving of her time and resources - to family, friends and strangers alike). Joyce will be missed greatly, but she is well again with the Lord and her beloved Bobby in Heaven. May her family find solace in knowing how loved and respected she was by so many people.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Girouard Family. We loved Joyce and Bob so much. They would do anything for their Christian Families. Bob is so happy that Joyce is now HOME with him.

Dear Joyce was a beautiful, gracious woman of God who I consider as one of my dearest friends and mentors. She and other women at the Freeport Church of Christ were my "other mothers" when my dad was the preacher there from 1970-1974. They loved me and guided me in the way of Jesus and I will forever be thankful. More recently Bobby & Joyce let my sister Rose, her son Russ, and I stay at the beach house two summers and it was a joy to reunite and rekindle our friendship with them. Joyce & I shared a meal several years ago and shared where we were in our journeys with Christ and I will treasure that memory always. May the healing touch of the Father's hand be with you in this time of sorrow and the joy of the Lord be yours as you look forward to seeing your parents again one day. Much love to you, Lynna Cox

Marny, We enjoyed getting to see Miss Joyce on some of her "outings" around the block - she was a gracious and beautiful lady. Opening your home to care for your Mom was a demonstrable act of Christian love. You obviously inherited her love of gardening, too, and we thank you for sharing the bounty from your garden. We sympathize with the loss of your Mom. Judy & Dwight Raiden
