William "Bob" Robert Johnson

William Robert "Bob" Johnson went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, April 26, 2013.


Bob was born in Jacksonville, Texas, on May 15, 1931. He served in the U.S. Army and drove supply trains in the Korean War. He moved to Freeport in 1952 while working for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad.


After working for the First Freeport National Bank, he went to work for the city of Freeport in 1974. After serving as a volunteer for 20 years, he became a full-time fire department member in 1977. He retired in 1997 as Fire Chief of the Freeport Fire Department, having served the city for 39 years. He was raised to be a firefighter in Jacksonville, following in his father's footsteps.


He was a licensed, certified Arson Investigator, and an instructor at the Fire School at Texas A&M University. He also served on the City Planning Commission.


Bob was a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Freeport. He taught Sunday School, Royal Ambassadors and served on various committees.


Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vicky Johnson; sons, Raymond and Jodi of Lake Jackson, TX; Ken and wife, Julie, of Douglasville, GA, David and wife, Jennifer, of Lucas, TX; and daughter, Diane of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Chad Johnson of Metairie, LA; Zach Johnston of Marietta, GA; Kelsey, Kristen, Kasey Johnson of Lake Jackson, TX; and Heather and Ashley Johnson of Lucas, TX.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alma Johnson; brothers and sisters, Virginia Smith, Tom Johnson, Pat Johnson, Polly Merritt, Paul Johnson, Betty Triplet, Sandy Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews.


Visitation will be held Monday, April 29th at First Baptist Church Freeport, 501 S. Brazosport Blvd, Freeport, TX 77541, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held Tuesday, April 30th at 2:30 p.m. at the Church.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make contributions to First Baptist Church of Freeport in memory of W. R. "Bob" Johnson.

Vicki and Family, I am so very sorry for the passing of Bob. I have lots of good memories of the years we lived in Freeport and we all attended The First Baptist Church together. I know the Lord is welcoming Bob home and one day all of you will also go home to be with him. I would love to be there with you during this time, but I am having problems getting around right now.
