Blanche (Sis) Slusmon Galloway
Blanche (Sis) Slusmon Galloway, of Lake Jackson, TX, passed from this life at her home with family by her side on November 25, 2013.
She was born to Blanche and Harry Slusmon on October 28, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, and is survived by her sister, Ruth Clayton, of Toms River, NJ, sister-in-law, Bea Englet, of Houston, TX, brother-in-law, Gale Galloway and wife, Connie, of Austin, TX; and daughter, Candace Ann Fennell and husband, John, of Columbia, SC; son, G.G. Galloway and wife, Cindy, of Ormond Beach, FL; and daughter, Gay Lynn Armstrong and husband, Paul, of Houston, TX; grandchildren, John Fennell, Jr, of Asheville, NC, Tate Fennell, of Nashville, TN, Grier Galloway, of Washington, DC, Haley Galloway, of Ormond Beach, FL, Robert D. Armstrong, Hunter Armstrong, Elizabeth Armstrong and fiancé, Patrick Boylan, of Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, M.D. Galloway; parents; brother, Harry Slusmon; and sister, Louise Tansley.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the former Riverside Country Club of Lake Jackson, TX.
Blanche spent her childhood between her home in Philadelphia, PA, and summer home in Island Heights, NJ.
After graduation from Toms River High School, Blanche attended Saint Barnabas School of Nursing in Philadelphia.
Immediately upon graduation, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant during WWII and was in the first group of Army Nurses to go through Basic Training.
In 1945, she met M.D. Galloway, a Naval aviator, in San Antonio, TX, and they married in Pasadena, CA, on January 4, 1946. After the war, they both attended Kent State University in Ohio.
In 1949, Blanche and M.D. moved to Lake Jackson, TX, where she worked at the Dow Chemicals Hospital in Freeport, TX. Blanche then worked for Dr. Gray, Dr. Miller, and Dr. May in Lake Jackson.
In 1963, they and their three children moved to Houston, TX, and later to Anderson, SC, to open the Dow Badische facility in 1966.
While in SC, the whole family fell in love with Hartwell Lake and Clemson University - where all three children and several grandchildren are now alumni.
During football season they could be found in Clemson's Memorial Stadium watching their son and the Tigers play, even when transferred to Williamsburg, VA. In 1976, Blanche and M.D. returned to Lake Jackson and remained there since.
Over the years M.D. and Blanche made friends all over the world and Blanche remained close to those they met during various travels and numerous moves.
Blanche loved nothing more than visits from her children, grandchildren and many friends. She enjoyed hosting bridge club, gardening, fashion shows, waterskiing, and attending book clubs.
Her family greatly appreciates her wonderful neighbors, especially Mary Ellen and Steve Thomas, dear friends Nonie Cone, Ann McKeithan, Karen Solsaa, her many life-long friends, and also caregivers Sandy Collins, Frances Knode, and Anna Graham of PHS, the Hospice Care Team of Lake Jackson, the Bethany Home Healthcare, and CareBuilders.
Honoring her wishes, there will not be a public service but donations may be made in her name to the Clemson University IPTAY Annual Fund, PO Box 1529, Clemson, SC, 29633.

We have been talking about Morris and Blanche the past few weeks wondering if our dear friend was still in Lake Jackson. I googled Blanche and found this! I guess we knew! Blanche was a very special friend to us when we moved to Lake Jackson. Our love to the family..
