Rachel Prescott passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2014 and went to join her Lord and Savior. She was 94 years young. Rachel was born on September 15, 1919 to George and Jewel Muckleroy in the small town of Weches, Texas. Rachel was the eldest of eight children growing up during the Great Depression in a farming family. She was valedictorian of her graduating high school class at Freeport High School and went on to attend Stephen F. Austin University where she earned her Bachelors in Elementary Education. Rachel later earned her Master's in Education from The University of Houston.
Rachel was married to James Donald Phinney. Together they raised three children: Marilyn, Don Ray, and Twilla. For many years, the family owned and operated Phinney's Food Market in Velasco, Texas. Rachel was a member of the Velasco Soroptimist Club and a past president.
But what Rachel was most known for was her long teaching career. Rachel was a loved and respected teacher for Brazosport Independent School District for over 30 years. She was one of the first teachers to have computers in the classroom and always had many students wanting to take her classes.
In her retirement, Rachel enjoyed hosting bridge parties, travelling, working in her yard, and shopping. Many considered her to be "the best dressed in church" and she loved putting together her outfits. She was blessed with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who lovingly called her "Munzie."
Rachel was a charter member of Velasco Baptist Church where she attended until moving to Lake Jackson. In Lake Jackson, she became a member of the First Baptist Church and attended regularly until her health declined. The church was a central part of Rachel's life.
At the time of her passing, Rachel was being cared for in the home of her daughter in Wimberley, Texas. She loved being so close to her daughter, grandchildren and great-children in her last months. Her face would light up when her youngest granddaughter, Haley, would run into the room. Many thanks go to the kind and helpful caregivers from Wimberley Home Health and Bluebonnet Palliative Care. Your attentiveness and compassion are truly appreciated and will not soon be forgotten.
Rachel is preceded in death by her parents George and Jewel Muckleroy, her sister Dorothy, her ex-husband Donald Phinney, her children Marilyn and Don Ray, and her son-in-law Robert C. Houston, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Twilla Houston; her grandchildren Byron Houston and wife Amanda , James Phinney and wife Samia, Stephen Phinney, Heather Steed and husband Adam, and Jonathan Phinney; and her great-grandchildren Ashley, Chloe, Owen, Robert, and Haley. She is also survived by her sisters Evelyn, Virginia, Emma, Jo Ann, Pauline and her brother Bruce.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 31, 2014 at Lakewood Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Lake Jackson First Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Byron Houston, James Phinney, Adam Steed, Ivan Phinney, George Steed, and Bob Brown. Burial will be at Angleton Cemetery immediately following the service.

Twilla and family, Paula and I are praying for you and your family during this time of loss. I am so thankful my brother Bobby and I had an opportunity to visit with Aunt Rachel and you during our visit to Lake Jackson last year. I have many childhood memories of us living next door to your family and having many wonderful times together. Uncle Donald would always give me a peanut bar when I visited his store in Velasco and Aunt Rachel would always have a big smile and hug for me. We will not be able to make the funeral but are there in spirit as we pray for your family. Please know we love you and hope you can visit us in Tennessee one of these days soon!!
