July 23, 1940 - August 18, 2014

  • Guestbook
On Monday, August 18, 2014, David Lee McMahan was embraced by his Lord and Savior, now perfectly healed from stage IV lung cancer. On July 23, 1940, the world was blessed with the arrival of David. He was born in Houston, TX to Artie Ray McMahan and Evelyn Bush McMahan. With the support of Hospice Care Team, David was able to live his final days at home under the constant care of his soul-mate, best friend and love of his life- his wife, Margaret. David and Margaret enjoyed eleven years of marriage and 18 years of friendship as co-workers in the Maintenance and Operations Department of the Brazosport Independent School District.
Upon David's request, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Monday, August 25, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Dr., Lake Jackson, TX.
From 1959 1968, David Lee McMahan served our country in the U.S. Army in active service, stationed primarily in Okinawa. David was honorably discharged ranking as a Staff Sergeant, E-5. He received decorations and commendations as follows: Marksman Carbine, Marksman Rifle, Good Conduct Medal with 3 loops, Expert Missile Man Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal with 2 loops. The U.S. Army also officially classified David as a Hercules Missile Mechanic, Specialist. Due to his steady mental and physical skill and stamina, David was selected to lead the Army's Nike Missile assembly team.
David McMahan worked for Brazosport ISD for 21 years, and was the District's first licensed plumber. He was a master plumber who had owned his own company in Lake Jackson, TX prior to eventually working for Brazosport ISD. David was known for his optimism, humor, generosity, unselfishness and kindness to all who knew him. After two years of retirement, David was rehired by Brazosport ISD as a school bus driver. David delighted in recent years in driving special needs routes. He would come home every day talking about them as if they were his own children. David also drove many field trips and assisted with other Transportation Department needs such as taking buses for repair and inspections. He brought laughter and love to all who knew him. David also volunteered at Sea Center Texas with his son, Carl Shirey, and assisted at the Brazoria County Wildlife Refuge. He was an active member in the Brazoria County Cavalry until his health began to decline with COPD in 2012.
David Lee McMahan became a Christian in 2004 and was baptized. For approximately 5 years, David was a regular member of a weekly men's Bible study group.
David's greatest passion and joy was in being with and loving his wife, Margaret; and loving his family. He absolutely adored all children and his own brought him tremendous joy and pride. David was predeceased by his parents, Artie Ray McMahan and Evelyn Bush McMahan; and his brother, Artie Ray McMahan, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Lena) McMahan; and by his siblings, Joyce Ashbrook, Velma Frazier, Ann O'Brien, and Charles McMahan. Additionally, David is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts who love him dearly and whom he loved.
David is also survived by the following seven children: David Lee McMahan, Jr. (Leigh), Dawn McMahan (Aaron Eustace), Danene McMahan (Roland), Denise McMahan, Carl Shirey (Tiffany), David Tyner, and Laura Tyner. Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive David: Trevor McMahan, Megan Trevino, Ashley Trevino, Emma Johnson, Lamar Burton, Sheldon Burton, Mikaya Burton, Clifton White, Jr., Celeste White, Kyli Shirey, Danielle Shirey, and Noah Shirey; and great-grandchild, Mia Trevino.
David Lee McMahan's greatest attribute and contribution to the world is he possessed the natural ability to truly love, encourage, forgive, support and bring laughter and hope to everyone he knew or encountered. What a gift he was to humanity. His passing is a horrific loss; however, each of us is a better person for knowing him.

I have fond memories of time spent with David when we were teenage cousins. He was always laughing about something and finding interesting things to explore. The world lost a great citizen.

Denise and the entire McMahan family, I am so sorry for your loss. He was dearly loved and will be missed, but just remember the great memories you have shared with him through the years. It will be those memories and the love of Jesus Christ that will get you through the bad days. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
