Nash was born on March 26, 1928 in Fort Worth, Texas to Dwight and Theo Poteet Kidd. At the age of sixteen, he went to work in the old fields to help support the family after the death of his father. After graduating from high school, he attended Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth. He graduated in 1949, with a degree in Chemistry.

In 1950, Nash was hired by Dow Chemical, Texas Division, in Freeport, Texas, as a research chemist. In 1952, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he was with the Signal Corp laboratory as a chemist.
